On-line Survey with Story Sharing on Risky Behavior for Home Safety

PROBLEM

In China, injury is the leading killer of children ages under 14; around 25% child injury occurs at home.

OBJECTIVES
1. To understand household injury among children through parents’ stories
2. To educate parents about household safety by sharing real stories and photos among families

METHOD
1. Mothers submit stories online relating to child household injuries and how they could change their behavior to avoid such injuries.
2. Analyze the risky behaviors in each story
3. Share moms’ stories on the internet to educate more parents

RESULTS
1. 5000 stories were collected of how the child was injured and what mom could do to avoid such injuries later
2. 2280 stories from 14 cities were appropriate to share online
3. The top four household injuries are falls (25%); burns including electric shocks (16.7%); cuts (9.1%); and poisoning (2.6%)
4. Leading causes of non-household injuries are traffic-related (71%) and drowning (5%)

CONCLUSION
1. The survey received accurate descriptions of household injuries
2. Online story sharing serves as a type of education as mothers reflect on how to avoid such injuries and are able to learn from others’ mistakes
3. The survey makes great use of limited resources through an online platform by combining the survey and education intervention together
